Lick
Client: School Project
The following illustration was created in October of 2021 in my Graphic Design 1 class which was an introduction to the department as a whole. We were taught the basics of the Adobe programs Photoshop and Illustrator. I have always been drawn to artists through the Pop Art movement of the mid-20th century. Roy Lichtenstein is one of the main inspirations for this piece ‘ Lick ’ which features an androgynous presenting individual doing just that to a banana. The creation of this piece was fueled by my distaste for the taboo behind sex-positive lifestyles. People who are comfortable with their body and their sexuality were always looked down upon, especially towards the LGBTQ+ community. There is a difference between being explicit and being comfortable and unashamed of who you are and doing a natural thing. In short, take this piece as a middle finger to that negative mentality.
Reflection on the Piece: The illustration was created with the goal of portraying the sexual innuendos are everywhere and that sex in general is apart of life so we should not fear academic and healthy discussions of these topics in higher education. Although the class assignment was simply to create an image using a color pallet generated from 2 colors of our choosing, I was able to create an image with a much deeper meaning and form of activism behind it.
